All I can say is I do a lot of drilling into metals, although I am not a machinist.
Oil is non-corrosive and it lubricates. Although its heat capacity is less than water it has a higher boiling point so it removes a good amount of heat. If I was using water I would have to have a constant flow and I am not set up for that. I also don't like the idea of water near electrical high speed tools.

I think tobias is referring to Crisco shortening. I haven't thought of that. My drill pressis in my lab and I can hardly use runnung water or machine oil, it would make too big a mess. I'll definitely try the pig lard thing though... Now my lab will smell like chocolate cake... LOL :D - Robert
