Just an idea, but if you don't care how it looks: I had the same problem (got one from a gang of three), so I just used a big PVC end cap for the knob. Open end out, of course. Looks like hell; works great!

You can 'mold' polystyrene into the shape you want, then paint it black, if you wish. That way, you get a tough and insulating handle made to your exact specifications. You should be able to find a suitable method for polystyrene molding on . The methods that involve polystyrene molding don't require the polystyrene to be very hot, nor do they have much risk of burning. The best part is that polystyrene is very readily available - styrofoam.
