I have used a work coil wrapped in cloth and then wet and frozen in a block of ice. The ice acts as a solid if brittle mass but the cloth gives it integrity in a similar manner to steel reinforced concrete or fibreglass. It still gets smashed but it is easy to do and adds kg to the force holding things together. The coil has forces of axial compression (will short circuit between turns) and radial expansion (will explode). My can crushing site. TDU
