Recently the "post your cool pic here" thread featured a damaged transformer, apparently fault of UPS, and a damaged meter, apparently fault of USPS. Both led to substantial off-topic chatter there. I've started this thread as a better place for such discussions.
But to begin with, here's my rant about something distantly related to careless parcel services. I'm bugged by some reports following the US Airways plane landing in Hudson River. A few passengers said the airline was not compensating them enough: Then there was outrage when airline insurer AIG, after receiving $billions of government bailout money, dismissed passenger claims:
Correct me if this is wrong, but I believe that liability of airline (above and beyond strict limits) requires proof that the passengers' damages are caused by the fault of the airline. If the engines had failed because of lack of fuel or an error of maintenance, yup, airline's fault. But simultaneous failure of all engines after ingesting a flock of large birds is, I think, like a meteor strike -- a rare natural hazard and risk, shared by the airline and passengers. Reminded me of a jaywalker held at fault after being hit by a car, who called a legal advice talk show, and felt entitled to medical bill compensation because he was the pedestrian and other party was driving a car.
