Part of the day job is being responsible for disaster recovery & business continuity planning for my company. I've had about 10 staff so far go down with Swine 'Flu, but the worst we've seen is about 2 days feeling rubbish, then two days feeling relatively better, but still pretty rubbish, then one day feeling OK but weak. After that, no problem - pretty much like regular (real) seasonal 'flu (not the head cold that most men call 'flu). Many seem pretty asymptomatic.

All in all, unless you are pregnant or in an otherwise vunerable group (weak immune system etc.), a bit of a fuss about very little. 85% of the UK population have no immunity to this strain, so eventually we will all get exposed to it, and one way or another, will gain immunity. We feel we'd rather get it over in the Summer when immune systems are generally good, than wait until the middle of winter. As some doctor said on the radio here last week - this is a marathon, not a sprint. Good for the drug companies if nothing else, though its nice to see some of the drugs being openly questioned in the press... Link2

Welcome to the wonderful world of viruses...

Sniff ill

Thanks for your reassurance that I'm not really ill Nick, you old rascal, or I shouldn't have known it.

I'd call it bloody nasty, and much worse than even a severe cold, so that it's tough for someone like myself who lives alone to stay in lively animal spirits. I barely had enough enthusiasm to open this morning's delivery from Bulgaria containing a new Cu anode 20W transmission target tube which I've been waiting upon for weeks - a bit like a child not wanting to get out of bed on Christmas Day to open her Christmas presents.

And that's me out for now, lads.

As you know, I didn't mean it like that - it's nasty all right, but for the vast majority, it doesn't seem worse than normal seasonal 'flu. My #2 got it, and very unpleasant it was to. But 1,000s are not dying in the streets, and what's more, are very unlikely to.

The hysteria about drugs, at least, seems to be quietening down.

August, in the UK is called the "Silly season" as generally there is little going on, so some daily "newspapers" (I use that term reservedly) get sales by whipping up FUD in the unsuspecting hoi polloi.

You certainly have my absolute, unconditional sympathy smile The government & pharmaceutical companies do not! mad

It just so happens that i went to the doctor today, and my doctor was talking about it.

She basically told us not to worry about it at all. She said if you get it, take your medicine and stay indoors (or at least away from the public) and do as instructed by doctors. She also said that the normal seasonal 'flu virus was much worse, in that it kills many times more people.

While the swine influenza virus is only around for... not too long (at least so far...) the seasonal 'flu is here for much longer, so it effects more people, therefor killing more people. Perhaps the swine 'flu kills more average than seasonal though.

I caught a flu a few months ago that kicked my butt. Not sure if it was swine flu or regular type, but I've never been that sick before. Very nearly had to go to the emergency room. My girlfriend got it from me and ended up even worse off, developing a nasty secondary respiratory infection that required industrial strength antibiotics and some god-awful codeine cough syrup to fight off.

In any case, there are some nasty bugs going around this year. Hope everyone manages to either avoid them, or recover from them speedily.
