Hello,

To prepare for my upcoming move, I wanted to get a new, local number. Fortunately, I heard about something for people in the US called Google Voice. It's not a phone service, as Google doesn't actually do VOIP or anything like that. It's more of a phone management service.

Basically, you get a number from Google, and use that as your primary number. You can set it so that when someone calls your Google Voice number, the call is forwarded to your home phone, your cell, or anywhere else you'd like. It can even send the call to multiple phones simultaneously, so you never miss a call. If you don't pick up, the caller can leave a voicemail message. The voicemail message is transcribed automatically (the transcriber is not flawless, but it does work well enough) and sent to you via SMS or email. You can also listen to your voicemail messages online. You can also send and receive SMS messages through Google Voice, both online or forwarded to another phone.

There are a number of other interesting features as well -- you can block callers completely (they'll just get a "this number has been disconnected" message). You can send someone to voicemail, listen in as they leave their message, and if you want, you can break in and talk to them. If a caller is unknown or they have caller ID blocked, Google Voice can ask who they are before ringing the call through to you (you can listen to who is calling when you answer, and decide not to take the call).

I don't mean to ramble, but overall, I am pretty impressed. I only have the one cellular number right now, but I like the service so much that I have all calls to my cell forwarded to Google Voice, so that I can take advantage of Google Voice's voicemail and caller blocking features.

Anyway, long story short, the service is just getting off the ground, so nobody can sign up just yet. I do, however, have one free invite. Any takers? Post here. The invite will go to whomever will find Google Voice most useful, so feel free to include why you're interested.

I'd definitely be interested in trying it out as far as more personal way for individuals to contact me for tech support on the products they purchase.

I have been quite pleased with it, although the service I use most is the free sms service which seems a little slow (at least compared to the sms chat integrated into gmail which has <1s latency) but is still nice to have since it is now integrated into the G1 phone. As a side note, if you go to Link2 you can put in your e-mail and they will send you an invite in a few days.
