My toys have taken a backseat to a new job and lifestyle recently, but tonight I went and had a play.
I base fed my smaller 500KHz coil from my slightly larger (Physically) 400KHz coil in the usual magnifier fashion and connected it up to my SSTC driver. I was quite impressed by the output, and spent a few minutes admiring, twiddling the interruptor etc, when I started thinking about DRSSTC's and how badly I need one in my life right now.
So I connected 2 0.047uF 1500V caps in parallel and threw them the primary, turned the BPS and on time right down and fired it up.
With only 40V into the halfbridge, I got output equal to what I would get with maybe 100V into the bridge without the caps. It's basically Steve W's miniSSTC circuit, Aerial feedback etc etc.
With 100V into the halfbridge I am getting WAY over what I ever have before. Maybe 11-12 inch strikes to a grounded target.
This thing is loud, noisy and obnoxious in an amazingly satisfying way. If I draw an arc with a chicken stick while I power it up, it stays "broken out" over about 60V, and breaks out all on it's own from it's little topload.
I am really rather excited right now.
I am not so excited about the fact I have left the cable for my camera at work.
I got a bit scared for the MOSFETs at about 100V so I backed off and let it run for a fair while, with no heating of MOSFETs or driver.
It's one in the morning, and if it wasn't for work tomorrow, I would swap the FETs for IGBTs and put in a 1:2:2 GDT, but thats tomorrow nights work.
Now, does this a DRSSTC make? and has anyone else made a DRSSTM(agnifier)?
I'll pop some pics up when I get to work in the morning.

Great to hear!

Do I sense your FETs are begging for mercy? Blame the IGBTs for not co-operating, I say.

Say, reckon you could pull out a current transformer and give us some figures? ^^

I've played around with some DRSSTC magnifier work and Steve Ward has built at least two DRSSTC magnifiers i know of. He has documentation of them on his website at Steve's HV.

I figured somebody would have done so already, but it never hurts to ask. The only reason I am going magnifier is to keep the Fres down a bit.
And BP? Tonight those IGBT's are going in and going to be working. Hopefully I'll be able to turn the variac up to 11.
Anyway, pics as promised.

I don't believe you need a magnifier design to keep the fres down. You should have no problem building a small DRSSTC secondary using the proper wire to get fres down to at least 100kHz. Steve Ward has some reference designs you can look at that are very small secondaries with Fres down quite low. I invite you to look at those to get an idea of wire size, etc... that he used.

This is really just a lashup so I can test out the IGBT's I have, I have a roll of 30AWG for a decent sized secondary here as soon as I find the correct former.
