It just was supposed to happen. Finally here I got to this - I have to fix a server that was not under maintenance for the last few years. Ok, I'll mostly rebuild it as it's all completely messed up, but one problem remains. The data the owner needs on the RAID array gone half-dead. That's a mirror array, and for some reason it got a dual headcrash due to some impact I guess, so after the server was powered off and back on it just fails to start well. One HDD is dead, but I can sometimes access the remaining one via USB-to-SATA convertor. However all I see is that the drive is not initialized and therefore gets no volume label nor letter etc. The question is - is there any way to access a HDD that was once a part of a RAID array by not using a RAID adapter?

I think if it really was a mirror (RAID level 1) then it should just look the same as an ordinary hard drive. So I'd have to guess either the array wasn't RAID 1 to start with, or both drives are broken. (The "sometimes" makes me think that too.)
Or maybe the drive has a filesystem or partition type that your computer doesn't recognise. What OS and file system are we talking about?

Sry :) Running NTFS under XP on the recovery rig and Win2k3 originally. This is surely a mirror so I guess it should read. I guess a volume recovery is needed, should I try the ChkDisk out?
[upd] now the startup check got stuck with "inserting an index entry into index $0 of file 24721" on the server itself

I had to recover a drive with similar symptoms not long ago. After several days of struggling with it while it was making ticking noises it suddenly came online weith just a few surface errors.
While it was in the confused state it would not boot and no programs would recognise it as NTFS but I could often use programs to read the raw sector data. After it changed its mind I could boot it and copy the files normally.
You probably should try to image it with dd or some other program and work on the image if you can make one so you don't mess up the original even more.

Recovery depends on the drive and RAID setup.
The driver CD that came with the MB or card usually will have a MSDOS application that will allow you to configure the hardware correctly.
However, this software can recover an array **after** imaging the HDs to a file...
If the RAID had drive encryption support enabled you must send it in to the manufacturer for recovery. Note, often such a system has tamper resistant keys that lock or scramble the hardware when the case is opened.
Also, you may want to try: i. Place HD in a ziplock bag with a silica gel desiccant pack for a day ii. Place in freezer for 1 hour iii. Remove HD, mount vertically, and continue imaging
