Hey guys, I just need one more component to finish up my first coil. The line filter. I'm looking at this 10A Schaffner on ebay. Will it work? I'm pretty sure it will, but the IEC is throwing me off, I dunno what that stands for, can someone please help me out! Thanks

IEC stands for Inertial Electrostatic Confinement. It's a type of fusion reactor. wink

...or perhaps this is referring to an International Electrotechnical Commission connector. The item you're looking at is a "power entry module" with an IEC connection, probably male (of the sort commonly seen on the backs of computers, monitors, and other computer peripherals). You would use a computer power cord with this module.

With that in mind, you'll note how pitifully tiny this filter is. The whole thing is not much bigger than the connector! Sure, it may work, but next to a dedicated line filter "brick" module, it probably doesn't provide much filtration. Just a guess. I don't have any datasheets in front of me, but I'm sure you could with a bit more Googling.

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

hey thanks, what kind of filter would you recommend? I'm using a 12kV 30mA transformer, so we r not talking about a pole pig or anything here. Just need a small filter so I dont damage anything connected to our main :)

I replied to your PM with answers to your questions, but will reply here too just for grins:

I'd just get something bigger. Intuitively (at least in my feeble intuition for filters), bigger = better. To a point, anyway. Obviously, getting a 70A filter that's bigger, heavier, and more expensive than your NST would be ridiculous, but I'll wager that one of those 20A Corcom or Sprague "bricks" with terminals on either end is going to do an all-around better job than the ferrite beads and other ultra-wimpy stuff that's probably in one of those power-entry-type filters. You want some hefty caps and chokes, and those things take up space.

Cheers,
Aaron, N7OE

Hey I found another one here:

I have been using one of the "3prong" computer cables to hook up my NST anyway, so it would fit into this filter perfect. It would also give me an extra safety on/off switch. It looks in the picture as if thats an on/off switch anyway, tell me what you think? I don't know which one to get. This one is nice though it's 15 Amp and only 2.01 dollars too! However, it's not very big? If bigger is better I'm not sure this would work. I would just really like to make use of that 3prong computer cord I've been using already.
