Here's the gig:
Old Win2K server box
New Server box
I want to migrate the data and settings from the old win2k server box to the new win2k server box. The hardware upgrade is enormous so ghosting or mirroring is out of the question (I believe...).
Two ideas, tell me what you think:
1. Attempt to ghost the hd images, pre-configuring the win2k server to accept new hardware.
2. Set up the new server to act as a redundant server for the current server. Once all the files and configurations are completely "backed up" aka transferred to the "new box," the "primary server" aka "old box" has an accident, "goes down" and the only one left is his new brother who happily takes up the task...
I am looking for any input. Since I am magic with computers here at my internship it has fallen to me (mostly to keep me occupied for the rest of the summer), to perform tasks that normally require an IT professional thousands of dollars to complete. I'm not complaining, after this I'm going to ask for a 10% raise. But it would be totally awesome if I could accomplish this task. I mean, I will anyways, but I'm sure one of us has some info or knowledge in this sector which will accelerate this process.
If we can decide on an appropriate course of action, then I will know exactly what to look for and the rest should be downhill.

that is why you use the sysprep utility before you ghost it so hardware changes don't effect it, you do a mini install on the new image and all your data and settings will be there, i think the tool is on the windows cd

I'm not sure if this will help, but...
Why couldn't you just make a .iso file of the primary hard drive on the old machine, and ghost it to the new machine? Perhaps hardware conflicts arise, I do not know. I personally don't see this as a huge task, but i'm not there doing the work
