OK, I bought one of these: Link2

And also a MJ10012 just incase I decide to try the single transistor driver again, but for now I'll try the 555 driver. Harry, PM on the way :)

hmm OK, so the circuit works, and I can hear audio, but once again I only get <1cm arcs, the MOSFET gets hot very quickly despite the huge heatsink. I have 5 turns on the primary, and it draws about 4A @ 15V.

Any idea's?

Well, that's a weak MOSFET and from what I can see from the datasheet, it's intended for a power amplifier. They don't say the ON resistance but I think it's gonna be huge.

You should get an IRF540 or IRF640 with respective voltage ratings 100V and 200V which are $1 MOSFETs for switching applications.

Wel ive managed to get a much larger arc and the MOSFET doesnt get as hot by adding more turns to the primary. So now I can get about 2cm before the arc breaks up, although it only draws like 2A from my PSU.

Audio modulation works :D Although a bit quiet ...

Would amplifying the audio input help at all? I do get audio but it's fairly quiet?

EDIT: This thing is only drawing like 2A @ 16V, why wouldn't it be hogging all the current it can get from my PSU when the primary is pretty much a dead short?!?!

Cheers,
Dan

The audio input ahall have a few volts of amplitude. At the frequency where the driver oscillates, the primary is not a short circuit. Probably has an inductance of several tens or hundreds of uH.

I made a video of it here: Link2

I see "Madkaizer" has also used this drive and he gets a fairly hot output. I guess I will try the IRL640 that Harry is sending (Thanks man) and see if I can get some more power into it smile

In the post! smile Together with a few other power types that you can try, lad.

Don't worry about money. Next time you see a war refugee or a boat person, put a couple of dollars in their hand, and I shall be repaid.

Don't know how long a letter takes to get Down Under,

Best Wishes,

Harry.
