I do have a transistor from the monitor, but I can't find any specifications on it at all. It's a Panasonic C5914 3D3
EDIT: Found a datasheet for it! Link2

That's called a HOT (horizontal output transistor). These usually do not work very well in this circuit but you can try.

Connected it up and seems to draw <1A, no heat, no sparks, no noise. Hmmm

555 is not really adequate to drive 2N3055, which gobbles up amps of base current.

An intermediate buffer amplifier should solve your problem.

Sorry about the confusion, I am playing with the single transistor driver right now, I will buy the bits for the 555 driver tommorow. :)

EDIT: With the 2N3055 driver, it seems when you first turn it on, the arc strikes, but if you blow it out while its still going, it doesnt restrike again. Hmmm

These very simple drivers are just toys, completely unreliable. With careful design you can extend their duration a bit, but they will fail. Regular flyback transformers don´t really produce sparks much longer than 1 cm between smooth terminals, or up to 3 cm between points.

Well, with that 555 circuit, would someone be able to help me find a transistor from Link2 to replace the BD243C with, or even just how to stack a few TIP41C's/add protection?

EDIT: I have decided to go with these Link2

My anti parallel ignition coil setup uses one and it hasnt died yet despite over 5 years of abuse :D

Aslong as it can switch fast enough, it should be good :D

I actually just found this Link2

Would it work with the MJ10012 I linked above? Looking at the youtube vid of it, it gives some pretty impressive arcs :D

Cheers,
Dan :)

If you can get two HOTs, they do work well in a current-fed Royer oscillator. The schematic for one is in the HVWiki.

With the 555 circuit you would be best with a MOSFET. Aim for about 7-10x higher breakdown voltage than your supply voltage.

I have an IRF634B from the same monitor, would it work? N channel MOSFET's are $23 locally :(

Dan, I have a new spare IRL640 Hexfet 200V (Rds(on) 0R18, Id 17A) which I'll be happy to send you if the other blokes think it would be suitable (I am not an expert on this type of circuit)

Send me your address and I'll put it in the post to you,

regards,

Harry.
