I finally find a Potential Equipment Transformer at a reasonable price, Get the seller to sell it to me seperately from the three phase oil circuit recloser it powered, shipped to me from California in a heavy duty wooden crate, and UPS STILL managed to destroy it. As you can see in the pictures, it's a Mini-Pig, but has portability. Twelve thousand volts @ 1.5KVA. This thing was dropped so hard, the trans core swung from side to side, damaging the can and pulling the INNER HV leed right out. If it was the outer leed, it would have been a simple fix.

It's going to be interesting to see UPS try to weasel out of this claim. Seems like anything damaged in shipping is always somebody elses fault, not theirs.

Anybody have any ideas on fixing this thing? I can't see any other way except disassembling the core, remove the secondary winding, then rewinding it. Really hate to see a nice transformer like this only good for scrap

Thanks,
bob

Ouch! I doubt UPS have any spare pole piggies laying around, maybe they can give you some money. Though not sure if your local electricity supply will sell you one :P

Those things used to power single houses or something?

For what is worth, 2 vendors we deal with at my work: One laser, and the other x-ray related, refuse to use UPS period. They claim that UPS is the single most destructive shipper of the big 3.

FedEx is the least, but only if they know, or think:) that there is a drop sensor in the box. Otherwise the post office, or a private freight shipper is the best bet. We have to ship items to Hawaii, and to my surprise its often not bad using freight shippers, because they charge by volume, and not by weight.

Also for what its worth, I shipped someone from 4hv a MOT, and USPS managed to bend the heavy 1/8-1/4" thick steel base plate... be thankful that they didn't run your transformer over with a forklift or something.

Regardless, file a claim and see what you can get.

I once went to a UPS Store to get a quote on shipment for a computer, for which I would have to buy packing materials I did not have the size of

when I asked about making return labels, so I might save money using one of my Pelican Cases, they said (this is a paraphrase): "it better protect it, because I can guarantee you that it will be thrown and throw itself during shipping, very hard"

If you're willing to drive to Philadelphia, I have several really nice potted GE potential transformers. These can easily run up to about 3kVA for short durations (240mA @ 14.4kV)
