Hello all,
Was at a hamfest about 2 weeks ago and found two color TV flybacks fo $2 each, NIB. I'm going to use the one pictured here to power up a 15 stage Marx generator. I stripped off all the superfluous junk (including the core spacers) & will drive it with a pair of 2N3055's. I hope to get 25-30 KV DC out using a rectifier stack from a X-ray transformer.

This flyback is set up so the 1B3 rectifier tube plate plugs right into the top of the flyback. I was thinking of soldering a piece of HV wire to the contact and potting it with some epoxy. Any other / better ideas. Also would like to know if I souuld ground the low side of the secondary to the frame or let it float? anything I can do to eliminate the primary side shocks / voltage spikes, so I don't smoke my power supply or send spikes back through the house wiring?

Thank you,
Bob

That is a pretty nice looking flyback :D.

First off, a normal X-ray rectifier will not work. They are not rated for high frequency, they are used for 60hz transformers. Unless there is some other type out there, such as an inverter Xray. Im not sure, i never looked into that kind of stuff.

Connecting the 'ground' of the LOPT output to the core, and then mains ground is always a good idea. This will prevent arcing between pins (or in extreme cases which sound sort of doubtful maybe internal arcing that could cause carbon tracks and ruin stuff) and prevent touching something that gives you a nasty shock or burn.

I would vote against the 2n3055 pair. They might not get the voltage you need, they provide very low current, and are inefficient and heat very badly. I would use a 555 driver. The driver could be made as small as one 2n3055 if you are determined (minus the mosfet and heatsink). A mosfet would work much better than the 2n3055 would. The 2n3055 (from what i understand) is not made for switching, as much as it is for linear applications. Mosfets live longer, don't heat as much, and can handle more power than a 2n3055. Also the two resistors dissipate some heat :P.

here you see what happends to a rectifier tube when its rectifying the output driven by a mazzilli driver: Link2

I suggest you either drive it with the mazzilli driver or f.ex. the TL494 driver I am wrting about here: Link2
