Yes, the white thing looks exactly like a "gas tube surge arrester" (sealed spark gap) -- I have never seen anything else in that style package. For example, Digikey sells them in voltages from 75 to many thousands -- in this case probably well over 1 kV because of the style of associated components.
And yes, how can the black diodes and flying capacitor not be a CW voltage doubler? I wager it's an engineering change because the original design couldn't charge the red doorknob cap high enough to fire whatever the trigger transformer goes to.
