I recently found my 12kv 60ma NST was dead, so i depotted it and i am currently soaking it in gasoline to dissolve the leftover tar so that i can further inspect the secondary and primary. I used about a gallon or two of gas (but that is only 3-4 dollars to fix a 100 dollar NST!), which will all be bad from the dissolved tar.

What should i do with this so called 'bad gas'? I could put it all in an old gas tank and use it in the future for more NST's (i have one more dead one, hehe oops did not know 20kv was more than 6kv :P) or cleaning stuff from gas engines (perhaps after filtering) but in the end, it will have to be gotten rid of somehow, and i want to do it properly.

Thanks alot, Harry!

When i am sure i am done using the gas, i will take a bit and see if it has become less volatile, and perhaps slowly burn it and through any left over particles of tar out, as suggested by Dave Marshall.

Either that or what you suggested, Harry. It is indeed more 'green' but i would have to first convince my parents to give me a ride, and then convince then i wont get gasoline in the car :P.

Thanks you guys!

IF you can find a suitable container and storage space
Then you should keep the Gasoline (petrol to us Brits)
It has 1001 uses, mainly for cleaning - paint brushes & anything oily.
Even when quite polluted it can be used as a first wash, with a little clean gasoline to finish.

You can also use it as a weed killer - without flames.

You can greatly reduce the amount of solvent that is polluted, by mechanically removing most of the tar. (Maybe you already did that.)

Put the asphalt-potted NST, ballast, line filter, or whatever into household oven at 200F or so for an hour.
Not hot enough for the black stuff to melt and flow, but make it soft like cheese.
Then dig in with putty knife, screwdriver, metal spoon, etc.

I have read of, but not practiced, a complementary thermal method. Freeze the NST coil and core assy after removing the outer metal box. Then energize the windings in a way that dissipates plenty of power for a minute or two, enough to heat & soften the tar next to coil while the rest of the block remains brittle. Next step involves a hammer (and safety glasses!). As a preliminary step I would measure the DC resistances of the dead transformer.
