Hello all, a few of you may know that i broke the transmission cover on my scooter when i wrecked awhile back. The main bearing that holds the kickstart lever and gears has broken out of it. Ive tried all manners of glues to fix it but no luck. I even tried orderng a new part but it got lost in the mail!So im down 100$ and looking to use the electric start. IT NEVER WANTS TO START with the electric start. It will start up when the engine is warm, or when i put the battery on the charger and then fight with it some. Could this be due to low cranking amps? Its a 6volt 4 amp lead-acid battery. Im thinking of getting some lithium-ion batteries to replace this one. ANy better ideas out there?

following the winter, my scoot's battery is done for. ive read all over the net that the batteries they come with are good for only about 1 season, and should be replaced with a national brand battery. given the shocking similarity of our scooters, ill bet your batt sucks too.

My battery seems to be fine. Takes a charge, holds it, lights all light brightly. Remotes start even gets it going...I barely use it anyway, but now plan to due to the damn kickstart fading out of the picture:-(Perhaps ill check out some of the surplus places for their gel-cells. I will need pretty exacting measurements to get it to fit in that small space.
Do they deliver as much cranking amps as a typical scooter battery? Matt

youve got me all confused man. does it, or does it not start electrically? you said earlier it wont start, but then you said it starts fine on the remote...?

Sorry for the confusion. It starts sometimes, but is very unreliable. Its most reliable with the remote start, but even then it takes about 10 trys. Would this be something to do with the puny battery, or just simply a crappy chinese scoot(no offense to anyone )
Maybe the one season thing is why my batt looks terrible I thought it was just me After replacing your batt with a goo done, does it start electrically now?Where did you get your batt from, as i doubt an autostore would have a 6volt 4 amp batt. Thanks! Matt

I’m not sure that I can write well enough to draw a mental picture of what I’m saying, but I’ll try.
In the old days of autos with points and condenser, there was a resistor in series with the coil. This resistor was removed from the circuit during starter engagement to allow the coil to give the best spark possible. There was a lug on the starter solenoid for this purpose. If this wire is disconnect the machine will run fine once started and will start fine manually i.e. by pushing, kicking, whatever, but will be difficult to start when cold or if the battery is low.

I know exactly what your talking about I beleive scoots use a resistor to prvent damage to the spakplug, but in my case i am using an Iridium plug so im willing to bet it will be fine w/o the resistor. I will have a look at the scooter to see if i can locate this pesky resistor.

Well, ive figured out that my battery will start the scoot fine. But, i have to leave it on the charger and then start it. On campus, it took a few tries, but started up. This is after I removed the alarm which draws current. What i want to do is have a backup battery in the trunk to boost the primary battery in the even it has sat too long on campus. I have a 12 volt 17amp lead acid. My primary batt is a 6 volt 4amp pos. I am working on finding a gel-cel to replace it that will fit inside the compartment. So, how do i use this 12 volt beast battery to SAFELY boost the 6 volt?My guess is a volt regulator and limit the current to something the regulator will allow, and moniter the charge via DMM(yea i know ima look like a dork on campus with all this, but hey, gotta do what ya gotta do). The 6volt battery wont need but a bit of boost from this battery, so id say a minute or so of charge. Should i just get the beefiest regulator i can find/afford and put a power resistor in there?

You could probably get away with just using a nice beefy resistor. Since the primary battery will be ~6v and the secondary ~12v, calculating for a 6v drop should give a pretty constant current. I am not sure how fast you want to charge it, but for a 1amp charge surrent you would need ~5ohms of resistance. This resistor should be rated for ~5w.
