This is going to be my dedicated project thread, my first real SGTC has come a long way since I joined this forum, wanted to thank you guys for all the help.

Afsgtc

Specs:

Secondary:
W: 3cm (1.181inch)
H: 13.1cm (5.12inch)
Wire: 36 AWG (could be higher but I really don't know -.-)

Primary:
5 1/2 winds
6AWG

MMC:
WIMA FKP1 (great caps)
12kv 3.3nF

Power source:
ZVS Driven Flyback from old TV (12v:120W) Link2

Spark Gap:
Static spark gap (Blower+Sucker) (now AFSG, still in development stage)

k=~0.13
Freq: ~1 MHz (according to Tesla Map based on assumption of 36AWG wire)

The coil itself is still far from being nicely tuned but is getting there. I am in the process of building a rotating spark gap, which I hope will improve performance of the coil. At first I was using a sphere toroid, which gave a nice long single spark Link2 . However, the sphere torroid caused many problems on the secondary ( a constant corona discharge from top turns, which made the coil look like an umbrella and major racing sparks which can be seen in the video), so I switched to a classic toroid shape. The classic toroid got rid of all the aforementioned problems, even though it is of about equal capacitance.

Here is a short "teaser" video. Link2

I will be updating this thread as the project progresses and I finalize the project (going to be boxed).

Slow motion SGTC video (120FPS) Link2

New video (Primary now 6AWG with a much better spark gap) Link2

UPDATE: Added pictures and a slow-motion 120FPS video (gets good from 1:30 on, TC seems to work much better when lights are off?)

Thanks

Good job!!!

I have never seen such an efficient ZVS driven Tesla coil i don't think. I have been wanting to make one for quite some time, but i always killed the flybacks because instead of using lower power and driving a Tesla coil, i just did 700 watt arcs :P

Thanks for your comments arcstarter.

700W? No wonder you keep burning up flybacks. :) The thing I have noticed working on this mini flyback sgtc is that the flyback gets extremelly hot, when the coil is not in at least semi decent tune and this is at the lowly 120w power level, maybe that is whats been killing of your poor flybacks?

Nice indeed, I'm using 555 flyback on a 1X6 inch secondary coil, and my max so far is 2-2.5 inches with my leaky leydens.

I hope to upgrade to NST but, Yours is looking very good and long streamers, Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the comments Killa-X! Commercial MMC caps are the way to go for flyback SGTC's some CDE caps or FKP1 (recomended) will improve output greatly.

EDIT: I updated thread with a slow-motion (120FPS video, gets good at around 1:30, it is memorizing, I can't stop watching it :)) and a picture.

Hey,

Thanks Harry, appreciate it.

I am working on the Rotary AFSG the past half an hour, it is built but needs to be tuned. It either works as rotary SG or static. Only for a second or two did it work the way I envisioned it -.-, gonna have to play around with it a bit. Will post a pic of it shortly.

Heh, i am good at making small simple cruddy rsg's :P. I have build more than ten or so, i have destroyed all of them though from stuff falling or a potato cannon being fired at it :D. On MSN i can should you how I made a very simple one that fits in a 1.5 inch PCV tubing, which will shield from flying electrodes... flying and hitting you. Like 1.5 inches wide by 6 inches long.

Arcstarter, next time I see you on MSN you will show me your plans for the tiny RSG, sounds quite interesting.

The project has been updated, I added 6AWG wire for the primary :) and made a more efficient spark gap. Results seem promising, now all I need to do is a final tune and box the little coil up. Thinking of going with an SISG for this little coil, to get up the max possible efficiency, what do you guys think, what kind of improvement could I expect?

I added a new video to the opening post.
