Here's a flyback sgtc i've been working on. The flyback is ZVS powered at 12VDC. Tank Cap is MMC rated at 32kv 9.5nf. Primary is 2 turns of random wire around 14awg. Secondary is 2" by 4" wound with around 32awg copper enamel wire. Spark gap is two bolts in a pvc structure. Max sparks are about 8cm.

That coil looks pretty nice! I definitley like the soda can topload smile

How is the mazzilli driver (appears to be one of mine) holding up?

the ZVS is beast!!! Way better bps with the zvs. it screams. i wanted to get a mot filter cap and bridge rectifier, but I've been laid off from work =/ soon I'll pump the zvs with around 36v or more, just a matter of time... I've changed the coupling and lowered the coil, sparks are at least as long as the top load is wide. spark gap is crap though it won't fire reliably. i get the feeling that the flyback is putting out alot less kv than i thought probably below 10kv, it won't fire if the gap is larger than 3mm. my bank is rated for 32kv so i should be good up to about 20kv.

Hey Corey,

Nice coil you have there! Topload looks great. Have you considered lowering your MMC capacitance? My coil Link2, which power input wise seems to be quite similair (ZVS driver, 12v input etc.) seems to work best at 3.3 nF, took me quite some testing to come to this value. This value might not be good for your coil, so you will have to experiment. A higher capacitance will also allow you to add a couple extra turns to the primary. I suggest experimenting with the MMC a bit, should give you some positive results.

I would also suggest blowing some cold air over the spark gap, I can't even describe how positive of an effect this has on prolonged coil operation especially on this type of coil, just a word of warning PC fans tend to die quite quickly when used to cool a spark gap, they are brushless with integrated controller which I suspect that is the culprit in the mysterious PC fan deaths (lost 5 brave soldiers already), have switched to a different traditional brushed fan, which seems to be holding up quite nice.

Have fun tuning up the coil! Post a video or two when you are done. :)

Thanks
brtaman

A small PC cooling fan will be put on the gap, the bolts have started melting the pvc so now it's hard to keep a steady gap, and has to be adjusted frequently. Modifications will be made, and pics will be posted later today when it's dark out. Any more questions will gladly be answered.

Oh and video finally.... Link2
