To do this we can get a rough idea by the following:
Total coilers = x * (Y / Z)

x = (Number of coilers on the net by Googling for home sites of coilers)
Y = (Number of coilers without home site in a typical area)
Z = (Number of coilers with a home site in a typical area)

Eg. Say I know that in Western Australia that only one person has a website and yet there are 5 coilers that I know without sites and perhaps there are 1000 coilers websites out there worldwide.

Total = 1000 * (5/1) = 5000 world wide.

Can any one do better than these figures with a different local geographical data or better total figure?

ALTATENSIONE group have 167 subscribers; about 1/3 of them have built at least one coil, i also know 10 other coilers not joined to this group so in Italy there are about 65 coilers.

here we have many power and dimension problems because the average household power connection is usually limited to 3kW and we usually live in cities, for these reasons, we generally prefer small and medium sized static spark gap coils and we love VTTCs;
at the contrary, solid state coils are a bit uncommon here (for example, we have more DIY X-rays machines than SSTCs!)

So we are looking for a number that would represents the "Active" coilers or what does it take to become a "coiler"? Would those also count whom, at one time (in this century :P) have built/bought a working coil (kit :P)? If so I would say theres atleast 15-20000 "coilers" world wide (i know about 20 "active" (with websites) in the middle eastern parts)

Hi! I'm from Italy too! So I am the 66th coiler here :P
And I'm an exception to the rule because I love SSTC and DRSSTC and I have recently built one...
Soon I will post something about it...

Ciao!

With due respect you give a completely unsubstantiated number and give it an accuracy to within 5000.
If you know that there are 20 active coilers in a given area and you are in a position to be able to know the inactive coilers and the reference area population then you are in a position to extrapolate. Knowing active coilers with websites is (relatively) easy, it is the much larger number of coilers without websites that needs to be estimated.
If you are, I presume , talking about mid eastern USA, how can you get to know non-website coilers in a population that must be in the multpile 10's of millions?
Choose instead a local town that you might know the stats better, and that may be a useful contribution.
In terms of deciding who constitutes a coiler, that is arbitrary and may be difficult to determine. Most of us would take it to indicate a peson with a hobby of Tesla coils and having made or assisted in the building of one.
I just discovered a coiler in WA with his own small hobby site site that was hidden in a large business site, which is what promprted this discussion. Also the very active Tesla Forum in WA and I had no knowledge of each others existence for years.

Hi guys

here in Bulgaria - I am the only one active coiler in the moment (that I know about afcourse). Have few friends that are , as Dr. Spark sad, arm chair coilers. One friend has been trying for a long time to get a small SSTC working ... but refuses my help ... so.... lets say we are two here.
Cheers :)

I know only 3 other people here who built coils besides me. One built a SGTC but has no site, the second built a bipolar tesla coil and put a MOVIE on youtube, the third built a small SGTC powered by a ZVS flyback. There are 2-3 people with some stories of building tesla coils in the past (not verified) and a few enthusiasts who want to build but they are still in the learning process.
