A few members of my astronomy club have suggested i take my 3" tesla coil to our observatory site to give them a quick demo of it in action. it sounded like a good idea to me as i have not had the chance to test it in the dark (due to my neighbours having babies, i dont want to make loads of noise and upset them)
my only concern is the fact that there are some overhead power lines very close to the site, i would imagine that the pole and pig are no more than 20ft away from where i would site the coil. My little 3" coil has produced ~2ft of spark to a grounded object and about a 3ft spark to me (once accidentally) so i have no concern with it directly striking the cables or pig, but i am still a little concerned about RF feeding in to the lines or thought maybe there may be an issue with larger potential difference causing a strike between the coil and the power lines/pig. from the pig is a drop cable which feeds the observatory site with power.
I wouldnt have thought it to be an issue, but hey i'm no HV expert. so i thought i'd ask for your opinions first.
i'm planning on doing this tonight so am keen to hear what you guys think.
I've already mentioned the other Health and safety issues regarding the coil to the people who are there and have printed off the safety info from pupman.com for people to read if they are concerned.

I suppose it is just conceivable that an ion cloud rising from the TC might unite with any coronas there might be around the power line - resulting in a flashover - but it doesn't sound at all likely.
But if you're in doubt about safety, Ryan, don't do it. It's your responsibility, after all.
