I inherited a CX3000 tube amplifier and its guts. This would be a great tesla project. I don't know if it works but it would be a project indeed and I am looking for idias. I have the basic scematic for the single tube VTTC. talk to me N.B.

That looks like a real nice amplifier, it has vacuum capacitors and everything. If it's designed for the ham bands, I would sell it to a ham for several hundred bucks and use some of the money to buy the parts for a VTTC.

If it's an industrial unit for plasma etching or suchlike, and can only handle one frequency (13.56 or 27Mhz I guess) then it would be harder to sell to a ham. I would still be inclined to keep it in one piece and use it to drive a high frequency Tesla resonator.

I guess you meant 4CX3000? or 3CX3000? confused The 4CX**** tubes are high gain tetrodes, not really best for a VTTC. Triodes like the 811 and 833 are easier to get working, and more forgiving of mistakes that would vaporise the grids of a 4CX-whatever.

Coming up with the filament supply alone for those tubes would be tough. I believe the 4CX3000 has a filament requirement of 9V and 40A i think.

did you inherit the power supply too? I'd like to see a pic of that if you have it.

i have a 4cx1500b
and the heater is rated for 6v at 9 to 11a
It was from a plasma generator,
I couldn't carry the tranny[>50lb]
but I kept the tube and the HV diodes.
are they really no good for VTTCs?

Tetrode tubes like the 4CX... series can be used, but it's more difficult. You need to provide a screen supply, and the control grid is much easier to burn out than in a triode. I would really recommend starting with a triode if you're a noob. (ie you don't know what a screen supply is, or how to calculate control grid dissipation.) Again, hams love these tetrode tubes for their linear amps, so find a ham and try and get him to swap it for an 833. :P

Here is my contribution to the "bigger is better" thread. It is a 60 kW 30 Mhz transmitting triode that runs on 12 kV and has a filament current of 89 A at 6V.

This isn't a "bigger is better" thread, it's a discussion on making VTTCs with 4CX**** tubes. My opinion is that the 3CX series would work well (being triodes) but the 4CX series would be more hassle than they're worth. TDU, wake me up when you get your 60 kilowatt VTTC working wink
