More compact RGB laser projector?

Hi all.
I might have found a way to make "It Can be Done" aka Rog8811's RGB projector smaller.

The secret seems to be to glue (!) the optics together with special UV setting glue of the same type used to hold
mirrors to car windscreens.

Glue I am using is the Loctite with the small treated pad included- its a light straw colour but sets clear.

Takes a while to set though, I'd recommend UV exposure for at least an hour and LED's won't work, needs to be bright sunlight on a clear day or a mercury tube.

I glued the optic to an infrared blocking filter which was added to my line generator module in place of the existing optic, and then added the R/B modules on either side so the beam emerges from the right.

Note that for various reasons some of the green light emerges at right angles so this could also be reflected and used elsewhere (double beam RGB anyone?) and also the alignment is critical though shouldn't be as bad if the setup is precise.

Also, the dichro from the PS3 module can be used as a spacer along with a spare CDROM lens to make a very compact blue/red laser module that neatly fits alongside the green module, allowing the whole thing to be used in place of a single green with very little increase in space usage.

I would also advise that the modules be set up and aligned first with LMP alloy, then once tweaked the blocks can be glued together, aligned and then UV "zapped" to permanently set everything to the final position.
watch out for the positive case on the green though...

pics soon.. :)

It is certainly possible to make his projector smaller, although I will warn you that getting the alignment right is pretty tricky. You might want to look over my RGB Projector for my efforts and comments. I am not a real big fan of the laser pointer form factor (since using a 100+mw laser for 'pointing' is not only illegal but somewhat unsafe), however his project is quite impressive none the less! Your plan for construction seems quite solid, although I would really recommend using some 'real' dichroic optics, while the optics in a sled can be used the really are quite lossy and a real dichroic mirror can be had for about $20 on ebay (and can be cleaved to make many mirrors the size needed for a project like this).

I would love to see you get it working!

update:- still waiting on the glue. the lenses on some dvd writers seem to be coated so won't glue correctly.

hopefully with the correct adhesive it will work, my experimental setup yielded fairly accurate alignment by adjusting the angle of the laser relative to the lens.
EDIT:- it works, the UV glue i am using sets in under 5 minutes, rock hard.

pics included :)
