As mentioned you can use switches to control the current or you can use fixed input to the D/A and change the reference voltage for full external analog control of current. There are many ways to use that driver, without explaining in detail what you need it is hard for us to give you any detailed advice.

i did post a link to a project that is very similar to the one i am going to do so their shouldn't be any confusion with what i am after, using that chip seems to be jumping through unnecessary hoops to control the motor as i would have to tune all of the circuit previous to the motor control section so that the voltages given out are correct relative to the binary number.
