Most of my parts come from the junk pile at work or from stuff I have collected over the years. The pyrex tubes are left over from several plasma experiments I conducted in 2006. The diffusion pump came from a fusor I built in 2003. I have a ton of ss flanges and vacuum stuff from several retired Denton sputter/coater machines I picked up for free. Copper tubing is on hand due to a large Tesla magnifier I built in 2006 and later cannabalized. So far the only out-of-pocket expense has been for the brass stock I used for the drift tubes (about $30) and for some small nuts and bolts ( $5.00).

The VanDeGraff will definitely cost some bucks. Estimated at between $500-700.

The gas handling system has yet to be designed. The manifold that was(and still is) part of the old fusor is not compatible. I will have to purchase some ss capillary tubing and related hardware that will probably be about $100.

I work slow so the cost will be spread out over some time. (I really dont expect to be done with this until next year.)

So, I suppose if I had nothing and had to buy everything new, the cost would be at least $2500. Probably more. I would imagine my pumps (Varian diffusion and Ritchie Yellowjacket 2 stage) would be quite expensive if bought new.

Regarding the 'gun',

since you're going to be experimenting with different seals etc.
I wouldn't use the crt gun because if /when air leaks in your filament will burn
(of course you know that and will be careful etc.) and a replacement may be difficult/expensive.
Scratch-building using for example filament lamp elements would provide a cheaply replaceable option.

What energies are supposed to be accelerated your particles?

Hello:

For glue use PVA, polyvinylacetate, it is the only one which holds up for accelerator tubes, it is still the standard for cemented tubes.

Very nice work. Appears to be good electrostatic grading.

You might enjoy reading about a similar project in C.L. Stong's "Book of Projects for the Amateur Scientist", circa 1969.
He details the cautions for high energy X-rays when running at 300 kV and up.

If you ever get to Wisconsin, I have a 500 kV Van de Graaff in house that we use for demos. External excitation at 7 kV DC and 1 mA.
Nice fat 28" sparks in winter time. 30" dia. sphere. Also have a 40" dia. sphere for a larger project.
