We all have ready access to W/Th rod....
do you mean such as how big a difference there is in voltage required to trigger the gap? or if it is slightly conductive (which I have always thought, but of a very high resistance)

Based on my complete lack of experience I'd say; 1 Probably insignificant - compared to the ionisation produced by the arc 2 Probably undesirable - since it wouldn't help 'quenching' 3 There may be less 'jitter' in the spark timing - but that's not important usually
I guess you're considering welding rods possibly a bit thin to conduct the heat away?

I think 1/4" diameter is probably the maximum (relatively available) size. Not exactly cheap but you probably would only need one as they are 7" long -
