I am looking at possibly building Richie Burnett's design, but can't find the MTW14N50 FET anywhere. Does anyone here have there own design or suggestions for a replacement/equivalent FET?

Thats the only place I have found anything about class E.... what do the classes mean? Whats so special about class E?

ANyways, just ask that guy :)

edit - oh wait.... always check 4HV :P

These are some of my notes and schematic when I helped a coworker build Richie's Class-E design several years ago.
It includes an alternate MOSFET as you asked for.

Also, you can check out Reaching's class-E audio modulated design here in this thread. This is a very nice design and works fairly well.
Its pretty simple too and requires a lot less magnetics than Richie's design.

Thanks guys.

Dr. GigaVolt,

On your schematic where it says air core inductors, why does it also say type 2 material? I thought T2 was a powdered iron? Thanks (and THANK YOU for documenting your magnetics much better than Richie did).

Up to 4MHz you can use Mn:Zn ferrite toroids for gate-drive and inter-stage coupling transformers. Above 4MHz Ni:Zn ferrite is the material of choice because its high-frequency losses are lower.

Type-2 carbonyl iron-powder from Micrometals is ideal for RFCs in HF Class-E power amplifiers. This material has low permeability, very low core loss and excellent robustness to DC saturation.

More specific details of the magnetics component's construction such as turns ratios, inductance values and coupling coefficients are really only appropriate for a particular combination of TC resonant frequency and power MOSFET choices. A change in the operating frequency, operating power level or even using a MOSFET from an alternative manufacturer can require the magnetics to be changed! Be prepared to do a lot of experimenting and tweaking to get efficient Class-E operation.

-Richie,

Because its a misprint.

What kind of tuning capacitor should be used in the final class E stage? If anyone has a particular brand and/or series that would be very helpful. Thanks!

Just get a bunch of ceramic capacitors. You'll be determining the tuning empirically for the most part. Just swap and test, swap and test, swap and test, until you get the proper waveforms etc...
There is also a nice tuning diagram (i forget where i saw it) which shows different scenarios of the drain waveform and how to correct it.

The capacitors you add may be different values, or even several in parallel.

No, thats not it.
Here is the paper that had the diagrams i was referring to.
