Hi,
I am working on a semiautomatic coilgun pistol. The goal for this project is to develop a moderately powerful pistol with a good rate of fire. Specs
- 1 Injector coil driven by 2x 100uF 400V caps. - 2 coils, both connected to 990uF 400V capacitor banks. - Optically triggered V-switching arrangement. - 20x AA NiMH cells - ZVS flyback charger which I expect will run at around 200 - 300watts.
Dimensions will be roughly 280mm long, 80mm wide and 180mm high. Projectile will be about 35mm long and 4.5mm wide.
If it can achieve 3% efficiency, thats a projectile velocity over 50m/s Almost as powerful as an air rifle . .
I just need some more balsa wood, PCBs and etchant!!! and some more spare time.
I'll upload all the schematics and diagrams tomorrow, after I've turned them from chicken scribble into something legible.

Two banks, one for each coil. Both coils have 990uF banks + a 100uF 400V V-switch cap. The second coil has a few less layers than the first one, so it'll dump its energy quicker before the SCR gets turned off.

I am pretty sure the hardest part of this gun is the spring loaded clip. I'm making my 4th spring and I'm waiting for my second clip to dry. The first springs had bits that were too wide or too long so they kept getting stuck in the clip. This spring is pretty good, and the new clip that is drying is made of plywood. The previous one was made of balsa wood and I think the metal spring was digging into the side which also would cause it to stick . . .
I think i'll pour a heap of graphite powder into it for lubrication.
