I have been invited by my former physics teacher in high school to give a demonstration of HV and electronics in his class, and he believes I may attract the other physics classes to the demo as well. However, I have nothing to show at the moment, though I should have a lightbulb plasma globe built in the next few days. I have two to three weeks to put together as many things (safely) as I can for the demo, and I was wondering what all of you think would be the most rewarding to demonstrate to intelligent 16-19 year-olds.

I would also like a bit of safety advice as well, as I haven't done a demo with this much that could go wrong in the past (I've taught 13 year olds hatchet, saw, and knife safety -- scary stuff, lemme tell you), and I certainly don't want to overstep my ability to keep my teacher and his students safe. I certainly would like to be invited back next year as well. The setting will be a typical science classroom on the third floor of the building, with a long counter/demonstration space in the front (mica surface, I believe) and rows of tables to the back of the classroom.

Projects on the Table:
-6" diameter light bulb plasma globe
-60kV MOT CW multiplier
-3"x6" OLTC, based on Steve Conner's OLTC I
-Mazilli LOPT driver
-Marx Generator

Demonstrations
-Demonstration of a homemade rolled capacitor (teacher liked this because the clear plastic showed the construction of a capacitor)
-Wireless energy transmission to light bulbs
-Tesla Coil Sparks and operation explanation (hopefully)
-HV Arcs and Sparks

Edit: Suggestions on IRC
-VDG (teacher has one)
-Flybacks and Iggies.
-Leyden Jars
-Lifters
-RF Wireless Energy Transfer

60kV MOT multiplier? I think not. You would be better with a ~20kV flyback and a tripler. Link2

I would also show some electrostatic and ion wind effects (corona motor) with the multiplier.

And a Jacob's ladder is a must, preferrably one which can run continuously to attract visitors smile

In my mind, there should also be some demonstrations of the faraday cage principle. I betcha some of these people still believe that the rubber tires keep them safe from lightning when inside a car.

For example putting a cell phone inside a grounded wire mesh cage and try to call it up, or use a cage to shield yourself from the TC if you find that safe enough.

And as the doctor said above me, everybody loves a jacobs ladder cheesey
