I'm investigating the possibility of running a virtual machine server, but my current hardware doesn't support virtualization. KVM/Qemu isn't really cutting it (unless I can figure out what I need to do to install paravirtualization drivers). So, I've been looking at CPUs, but it seems as if there are no socket 940 processors with hardware virtualization support. Can anyone confirm or deny this or provide any insight?

Well I have a socket 940 dual opteron server with two 1.8Ghz single cores in there. Haven't played with a virtual machine on there yet. Though the bios has a function to enable VMs and the manual says it also has VM support.

Well that's interesting. I haven't had any luck finding a socket 940 device with hardware virtualization, so I suspect that your BIOS may just have an unnecessary configuration option.
[edit] Oh, I just found this: The simple rule is "if it is a DDR2 and is not a Sempron, then it has AMD-V". So I guess there's no chance that I can find a CPU that supports AMD-V for my DDR1 equipped server/
