I just randomly had a thought...and chat to arcstarter about it...

Lets say it's night time. your outside running a tesla coil. All of a sudden, a fly comes by and zooms over the topload. Does it die? maybe in a cool fireball-death to the ground like a falling star?

If yes..What if you put a tesla coil by a beehive and turned it on.. Wouldn't it kill all the bees since they would just keep falling? Or is the air more attractive to electrons than a bee...

Be one hell of a cool bug zapper :D

I had a run about a year ago, and bugs tended to land on the toroid. I had enough output power that they didn't become a significant breakout point. The next morning I noticed a few dozen mayflies stuck to the secondary. They turned to dust when I touched them. Interesting that they died there. I have a video on YouTube named "Death of my 12kv transformer" I think... In the end of the video, when there is only a mere arc from the backside, it's because there was a bug that had landed there. My new breakout point. :)

So i take it only works when they land on it, not an actual streamer going to them :( heh, sounds like you had fun with those may flies :P

In one of the RATCB DVD's, I believe there's a scene where a flying bug got hit and dropped to the floor. After the power was turned off, a dude went over to check it out. It was still alive, but certainly down.....

Mayflies are a real pest in my area at a certain time of year. I thought of flooding the toroid with halogen lighting and then after there was a cloud of the little buggers around energize the coil. That's just mean, and I couldn't bring myself to it. :)

I dont remember if its TDU, drspark or drhankenstein that got some pictures of a bug landing on the middle of the secondary causing a flashover and it burnt the secondary coil on the middle.

From what i was told, that is how The big Bruiser secondary got ruined. A bug landed on it while it was running and it flashed over into a meltdown.

last time i ran my TC i found at least 10 flies on the base around my primary, i'm not sure if they got zapped mid flight or just landed on the primary and took the brunt of the nst, but they were certainly dead, none of them were severely burned or turned to dust.

i watched a wasp fly right by one of the streamers but it never got zapped, although i had hoped it might

Cruel i know but wasps are the only kind of creature i think the workd would be better off without (ok... the only kind of british creature, there have to be plenty of other nasty things in other climates)
