So next everyone with a runny nose will be our enemy!
They'll be rounding us up for mass inoculations. Will Baxter be administering it too? Luckily the government is all set up for such a pandemic, they even have enough coffins!

Just had a case identified here at Newcastle. A bit too close for comfort...

Just though I'd give some info about my location (SLC, UT). While there haven't been any confirmed cases here yet, there are several waiting for results. One of these "highly probable infections of H1N1" people gave a presentation at our school recently. As a preventive measure, our school is closed for Friday to Tuesday, and those in contact with this "probably infected" individual are recommended to get tested.

I doubt that anything will come of it (other than a 4 day weekend!), but I will try to give an update if anything does happen.

Most of the UK cases are now being treated at home - which puts this latest media-political world-threatening event into some sort of perspective.

To offer a counter view, there are some reports that the US and Canadian tamiflu stockpiles were about to expire, and also conveniently May is US Nielsen Ratings period.

Very conveniently timed, and with more information becoming available its looking a little fishy. It is simpler to explain all of this by a massive screwup by governments, regardless I would like to keep this thread on topic about the actual course of the disease. It looks like there is a large amount of open discussion about it (although it could get messy real fast). If the mods are ok with it, another thread could be started (I would still like to reserve this for informative purposes.

Edit: Late night update
The WHO has changed the disease name from Swine flu to Influenza A (H1N1)

Container of swine virus explodes on Swiss train
Tue Apr 28, 2009 9:39am BST

ZURICH (Reuters) - A container of flu virus samples packed in dry ice exploded on a Swiss train, injuring one person but posing no other risks to humans, police said on Tuesday.

The box held vials of swine flu virus, although a different strain than the H1N1 variety that has caused about 150 deaths in Mexico and infected people in the United States, Canada, Spain and Britain.

A technician was transporting the container on Monday night to the Swiss national flu centre in Geneva, where scientists are developing a flu test for humans, police said.

One woman was hurt when the box exploded in reaction to the dry ice used to keep the samples cold.

After consulting virus specialists, the police decided to stop the St. Gallen to Geneva train before it entered the station in Lausanne.

The virus specialists confirmed that the samples being transported posed no risks to humans, police said.

Well, we officially believe my dad has the swine flu. He went to the doctor, and they said something like it might be a strain of swine flu.

He is being very quiet, and not even watching TV, which is really saying something cause he loves TV.

It just started as an "ear infection". He went to the doctor, and they prescribed some ear medication. Overnight, he got much worse, and started feeling bad and all that. Just got back form the doctor 30 minutes to an hour ago.

While I've been busy spring cleaning and haven't had time to make posts on 4hv for the last week, I am more concerned because of what is going on at my mothers workplace (she is a registered practical nurse).

They have an outbreak of 'influenza A' on a different floor of the elderly care facility, while they said that its not swine flu, they were very dodgy with their answers. Specifically when confronted, about the specific influenza strain, officials said after being dodgy, that they haven't confirmed it as being any other strain (the only real way to confirm its not swine flu is to confirm that it is something else). Additionally, they told all the nurses in the building to go to their pharmacies and get prescriptions for Tamiflu and to take it as a prophylactic.
