Hi all.
I was looking into the safety risks associated with lasers as well as LED's including the recent near UV high intensity diodes and was very concerned to read this article.
This could be a major liability issue, perhaps we should link to safety related sites or at least warn people of the risks associated with short wave diodes and advise caution.
I actually suffered a case of "arc eye" from a HD burner diode reflecting off the desk at relatively low power despite taking some precautions including welding goggles, as it turns out they attenuate UV but do not block it completely (which seems to be essential).
Just to be on the safe side, I would advise that anyone doing a project involving even low power UV diodes or lasers (even the Xbox360 HD sort) invest in the correct safety equipment BEFORE purchasing or using these diodes.
Also even a sub threshold or partially fried LD can emit enough UV to be dangerous even though it is not lasing at over Class 2 limits
Rule of thumb, if you can see any light whatsoever when the diode is on through the goggles, find another pair.
additional material:- EN 60825 seems to be useful
Better still, use an indirect viewing system such as a head up display inside light tight goggles and video camera. I am working on this...

Better warn TDU, what with that 10W output LED array he has. He's gonna' get eyeball cancer if he's not careful!~
I like how they say lasers and LEDs. They are very similar, since they're both make-able with diodes. There's also the fact that they put out nearly single-wavelength light.

Thats 100W actually. It is low risk as it does not have a UV component. At present the beam is so diffuse that it is no more acute danger than any other very bright light or the sun. Unlike short arc Xenons etc which do have a major UV component.
