this might work, haven't tried it yet. A more efficient method might be a "flow cell" processor with a system for drawing off the deposited glycerol.

Also there are articles about transesterification using ultrasound (seems that the high peak pressures can efficiently convert cooking oil with minimal heating)

With a small addition of a DIY colorimeter (to measure fuel turbidity) and spectrophotometer (using CD blank + DVD laser + camera) you could even have the controller adjust the chemical levels in realtime as needed and draw off the fuel into a heated storage tank for use.

would you be looking at building some kind of engine or cell that is fed with KOH/NaOH, methanol/ethanol and WVO or are you just pointing this out? What would the reason be to invest in such an apparatus if the manufacture of Bio diesel is really very simple...

Making biodiesel s easy enough but separating the waste glycerine (etc) from the product is either rather slow (if you just leave it to settle) or rather energy intensive (if you force it through a filter).
If this trick with the high voltage can be made to work commercially it would improve the overall efficiency of using biodiesel. I don't think that savings would be huge but every little helps.

BTW, the thing for measuring cloudiness is a nephelometer, not that it matters much.

I've heard of using a centrifuge but this is also very slow. It seems to work using electrostatics so even a CCFL driver followed by a 4 stage multiplier would probably work.

You could treat a grid of containers at a time and then siphon off the fuel from the top via an array of small peristaltic pumps made from a spare PC PSU fan... i call it the "Squid Power System" .. tongue

Really if you make a big batch letting the glycerine sink down is well worth the time it takes. Also as I doubt any one here will start makign a comercial process to produce Biodiesel using this set up is not very practical, none the less the cool effect is there.
Of coarse my curiosity would get me to build this, but i don't have materials at hand, and have other project. I will keep an eye on this thread, it could turn out very interesting, perhaps some one could even build a little apparatus, fed with methanol, KOH and WVO, it would surely be very interesting.

I think people are getting away with using vegetable oil directly without bothering to convert it to biodiesel. At least that's what a minicab driver told me he was doing.
