Hi all,

I posted a while ago about an SGTC project but since then i've moved on to solid state - it looks far more fun. I plan for it to be a 2 foot secondary (30AWG) with a 25" toroid (rigid aluminium ducting) for a low fres (75kHz), and a helical primary with 0.3uF MMC - the price of the Cornell caps on digikey isn't bad! Also, I came across quite a few Powerex CM50 IGBTs that I plan to use at first since I anticipate burning several of them out. I have been told that they could still be quite effective and achieve high peak currents despite the low RMS current rating - what can I really expect here?
Anyway my questions:
1. How are people making the bridge? An obvious solution is just another PCB that is mostly copper - but I figure there's easier ways. Suggestions?

2. My primary goal is audio modulation which I know requires programming a microcontroller. I am an engineering student so I am somewhat prepared for this although my current knowledge is limited (I have only used a PIC18). I know most people keep pretty quiet about their audio mod systems, but I am looking for some push in the right direction - such as resources on signal conversion (esp. MIDI) and just what formats people have used (e.g. what microcontrollers/language?)

Thanks

i have not yet built any solid state Tesla coil, but as for understanding operation and such i found Steve Ward's site to be quite inebriating. Good Luck!!! link---> http://stevehv.4hv.org/SSTCindex.htm

Projects like these I usually build with experimenter's board, you know, the 100x160mm cards with all the 0.1" spaced holes in them with copper islands. I never etch PCBs unless there is more than one board to be built. Large power devices are mounted onto heatsinks and then wired to their associated components mounted on the board. Or just use a plain piece of copper clad board (the "haywire" technique). Or don't use any board at all, just have everything floating with some blobs of glue to the heatsink (not hot-melt!!!) if needed. And of course use nice thick wiring for your power semiconductors.
