 		SMPS modding has always been a popular subject on 4hv, and a few people have modded TL494-based power supplies (usually ATX-type) for variable output. I've tried it and got them to vary all the way down to zero, and also added an adjustable current limit. I have an old 30V, 7A TV camera power supply modded in this way, that I've been using as a bench power supply and battery charger for years.

Since your supply also uses the TL494, the mods may well be applicable. Go forth and search the forum and archives.

SMPS already have filters to stop their own internal noise from getting out and interfering with other equipment, so they shouldn't need much more protection against spikes. Maybe a TVS across the output, or something.

 		I need to get some practice on this old PC PSU first it has the TL494 in it this is just a precaution so if I mess up it won't kill the good PSU so hopefully I get it right both times because this old beast has been through alot with me. smile

And in the second picture the blurry orange thing is a variable resistor right next to the TL494?

Yepp. If you're lucky it's factory modded for 12V +/- two-three volts already, making further modding a piece of cake.
