I'm a sucker for vacuum technology but I find that solid state circuitry offers better control. So I've built a PL519 VTTC with a 4046 VCO. With a new secondary. So far the results are promising:
Vttc2 Streamer2

I'm not finished tinkering by a long way but I must admit that I expected a bit more oomph from this setup. In the blurb on my site I already outlined some possibilities but maybe I'm overlooking something obvious?

In the meantime the control is great. The tuning of the VCO will smoothly let the plate current dip and the streamers peak. So that's a success in any case!

Well, it's a pretty coil, but I have to let you know that your primary is DEFINITELY not wound in the optimum manner. I highly recommend getting something to put around the secondary and wind the primary on. If you don't you will probably never have anywhere near optimal results. I've tried similar designs and found out first-hand that this will not work well.

Good luck

The primary is the first on the "todo" list. I have some nice thick speaker wire (4mm2) that should do just fine. There's a whole long Easter weekend ahead that I can use cheesey

That sounds good.

I wish you luck. Make sure, though, that you don't try connecting the top end of one strand of the speaker wire to the bottom end of the other strand, or the opposite. I recommend stripping the two sides in half, winding with 20 turns, and saving the other side for another project. Let us know how it goes!

You could also connect the strands in parallel effectively making it a bigger wire for higher current carrying capacity. Why wouldn't you want to connect the end of one strand to the beginning of the other? Insulation problems?

Yes, there's a much higher risk of insulation failure. If you're running 10KV at 20 turns, including going down, that's .5KV per turn. At the first turn you have .5KV, but at the eleventh turn, which is back at the bottom, next to the first turn, you have 5.5KV potential. The total potential difference is 5KV, and the insulation is rated at around 600V, somewhat conservatively. Chances are it would be sufficient for 1000V, but I doubt 5000V.

I may be completely wrong in this, but I know that it's not wise to do that because of arcing between turns on the primary. People commonly complain about it on their primaries when using the copper tube primaries.

I'm gonna run nowhere near 10 kV, just a modest 2-300 V. Since I'm using a line output tube (PL519) I'd rather go for lotsa current than voltage. Only thing is I can't find the speaker wire anywhere so I'll just use grounding wire (the green/yellow striped stuff that's being used in Europe). It's nice and fat too cheesey
