Hello, my name is Jason, this is my first post at 4hv.org, im 14 years old turning 15 this year :) I've always been fascinated by high voltage electrical arcs, sparks, DIY electronics. I've had experience making 555 timer based flyback drivers before, but it sucked, here are some reasons: 555 timer IC burns out often :( , not very efficient, cannot operate over 15 volts. I also had tried the easiest 2n3055 driver but it never worked for me, maybe substituting the resistors is that much of a good idea. Mazzilli's driver works perfect, on the schematics it says it should use IRFP250 MOSFETS, due to the shortage of transistors that I have, I can't find any IRFP250s but i found 2 6.6amp mosfet from old computer monitor on the street. It was working find at 15 volts, until i connected it to a 24v battery it worked for like 2 minuted and then 1 of the mosfets exploded =( Would replacing the mosfet with a NPN transistor work?

here are some videos if u want to see:

A solid construction with short wires would help. With an open construction like this, a movement where you are not looking may cause a short-circuit and a disaster. Remember also that any HV supply must be grounded, or HV at both polarities will appear everywhere.

doubt a transistor could take the currents, stick with fets

A BJT (bipolar junction transistor aka transistors) will not work. The driver uses mosfets because they are voltage controlled, not current. You can use IGBT's too (insulated gate bipolar transistors), but they are rather rare is circuits that you might find in salvageable stuff.

There is a circuit that is much the same, but uses bipolar transistors instead. This is called a royer. The first schematic here: Link2 is mostly the same as the ZVS Mazzilli
circuit, but a bit different feedback scheme. This might not work as well, but since you have all the components, you can always try it. I have a very small smps nst transformer that uses this circuit.

Maybe the FETs overheated? 6.6amps is not that much of a current rating.
What was their voltage rating? Remember it must be at least 4 times the supply voltage.

I just found a dead 12V motor controller, it has 12 mosfets inside hopefully not all of them r dead. they're IRL3103 it has a Vdss of 30V and continus drain current at 64A. please take a look at the datasheet. is the rated voltage too low?

Yes the voltage is way too low to be used in a Mazzilli flyback driver. You want something around 200V or more. The IRFP250s aren't that expensive off ebay. IRFP250s have been shown to work really well in the driver because it has high enough Vds and current carrying capabilities to be able to push lots of power through the driver. Also the MOSFETs are fast enough to not have lots of losses.
