Again, the input is supposed to go first just to the 2.2uF capacitor, nothing else. This is important as the input is referenced to 0V and needs to be decoupled right at the input from the frequency pin which is at a few volts.
Then, after the cap, connect the pot in series with the 2.2k resistor to ground, and to the frequency pin of the 3525.
EDIT: Sorry, maybe I read your circuit board wrong, its not obvious from it where the 10k pot is connected to. If it is just the "left" pins which are connected and the "top" one is floating, then that should be OK.
EDIT 2: You got the transistor connected wrong. The SOURCE shpould be grounded while you connect the transformer between DRAIN and the positive main power rail.

okay... with great hesitation.... this time, i really think i have it. lol
it turns out my drain and source on the fet were connected incorrectly. the drain should be connected to the primary coil, which is connected to V+ on the high side.
the source pin is grounded.
hopefully this thread will help some people like me to think their way through a fun project like this.

Teslacoolguy: thanks bro. i need to find a place to host the file, and then i'll put up the brd and a parts list.
I started playing with the better output version too. Tomorrow morning I build the first one, then once my oscope gets here I'll build the second. Just enjoying playing with eagle.
I'll start a different thread for the better output version.
