Okay so I wanted to maximize my coupling for my SGTC for best performance. We know that many factors must come together for this and one is the vertical positioning of the coil itself.

I remember reading that in one case on the old forum the secondary coil was about 2" above the first turn of the primary. I wanted to see how things compared with my coil and setup.

My coil:
roughly 950 turns #24 AWG on 4.55" form close wound, ~17mH inductance and ~20R.

What I did was vary the insertion and see how this affected the coil output.

Experimental setup:

Audio generator sending a moderate signal to a small amplifier capacitivily coupled to the primary inductor.

Secondary inductor loaded with 75KR non-inductive power resistor.

So here's what I have:

Signal in = 1.24V on primary from the little power amp

Output Azimuth
5.6Vpk 0 - level with bottom turn
6.0Vpk -.75"
7.0Vpk -1"
7.6Vpk -1.5"
8.0Vpk -2.25"

So we can see here from the appriximated ringdowns in the secondary that the voltage increases as we lower the coil more and more, but it does approach a limit after about -4".

I think -1" is doable in my case, but will probably require some real varnishing on the secondary.

But that's the plan so far. Hope it works.

Varnishing shouldn't have any effect on the coupling or in preventing racing arcs if that is what you meant by your statement.

No. The problem is secondary-primary strikes in close proximity. At -1" I think the voltage rise will not present a large problem. It may, but I'm going to check it out.

i have also tried doing this and a problem for me was the first turn of the primary hitting the secondary(getting struck)

right. In that case you need higher standoff voltage. A good preventative measure is an outer ring around the secondary. I am somewhat concerned with this considering the voltages I'm going to have. But I will see what I can do with varnish, tubing, and possibly a plastic ring.
