details a number of BGA chip related issues
it appears that the HDMI interface chip might be responsible, as it has been replaced with a BGA recently on the newer boards.
This might also be relevant for laptops, as "no screen but boots ok" is a common fault especially on HP's.
I've done the reflow trick before using thermal pad underneath as a heat spreader (to reduce the thermal stress and board flexing) and a heat gun, and it does work. In fact the graphics card in my current PC has been butchered in this way and 4 months later no problems... :)
