Been a while since I posted, and also since I've even mesed with coils, at any rate after looking at some of the new projects with coils and have a remote interruptor, I noticed a few people moving to fiber optics due to what I imagine being RF "resistant" pulse transmissions since the only places for the coils RF frequencys to affect the the circuitry is at the interruptor or at the driver board. The problem with this is the pure cost of just the fiber optics just trying to get a 9' (3M) ST connector fiber optic cable and 2 phototransistors with st recepticles costs around $80 US.
Aside from scrounging around around on ebay digging around google, where have those that have used fiber optics gotten their parts, also are there any other less expensive alternatives to fiber optics, and heavily sheilded wired systems?

I've used TOSLINK fiber optics. Its used in home audio and stuff. Got 50' of cable for $15 from ebay. And digikey has the transmitters and recievers for a few bucks each.
The only problem I had was the reciever I picked (TORX177) had a minimum data rate of 0.1MB/s so it wasnt able to recieve the slow firing signal (<1kHz). My solution was to use a 4MHz oscillator AND'd with my firing command. This sent 4MHz bursts to the reciever. Then removed the 4MHz with a simple RC lowpass filter.
It looks like the TORX147 is capable of recieving down to DC, but it is only 2.7~3.6V compatable.

I'm not sure what the problem is. I've built a wide array of solid state tesla coils to very small to very large and always ran my modulator via a coaxial cable. never had a problem - even on audio modulated systems.
in my experience, people who have "noise" issues with their modulator are generally having problems generated elsewhere in the system and its usually the first idea they have - well, it must be the interrupter cable, when in fact it isn't.
i don't see a need for fiber optics unless your doing real low level signal stuff.

Use multimode optic cable for TCs singelmode is just not needed. For transmission over the cable use AM with a high carrier frequency (1Mhz+) in the end of the cable (@ the receiver) use a lowpass filter to filtrate away the high carrier frequency. Try to use as high voltage as possible on all components, this will make the system more noise immune. You can alternatively shield the electronics in some kind of RF shield.

Ok, I wasn't to sure if there would be an issue with using cable, since the last time I used a cable for the interruptor to the driver I could hear a shift in frequency while holding the controler and operating the coil, although that probly was due to lack of rf sheilding, on the entire system, which probably lead to the fets inevitable demise. thanks for the info guys.
