I recently aquired this pig The oil in the bottom was pretty nasty so im assuming the pig is in poor condition at the moment The stuff in the bottom ranged from dirt to dead bugs.
So I want to clean it up. The paper apears to be rigid so I'm wodnering if it has resin on it. If it does have resin on it I want to be sure not to disolve that resin. Any way I want some help finding a solvent that will remove the dirt and grime without causing damage to the pig it's self. I'm considering naphtha as a possible solution.
below are some pictures; sorry about the poor quality.

If the dirt isnt bad and there wasnt much water, I would let the thing sit out for a while, and scrub the dirt off with a stiff, nylon brush. Doesnt sound too complicated.

Perhaps if the outside is dirty (like not buried deep within the windings) you can use isopropyl alcohol? It evaporates fast, and i have never has it take enamel off, but i am not toooo sure. I soak my circuit boards with it, and use an air compressor to take the standing water off, and in a few minutes, it is completely dry and does not even have the smell of alcohol.
If you have rust on any of the can or what ever, get a scotch bright pad (can be found in automotive stores, just ask AutoZone or someone to point you to it) and some transmission fluid. Put a little transmission fluid on the scotchbrite pad (no not bright, it is brite) where you will be using it, and scrub the rusty part. I have used this method on engines that require extremely precise dimensions, and it works absolutely great. It takes rust off better than WD-40 ever will, and it does not have much of a smell, so that is always cool. When i am done, i clean with water and then dry and spray with WD-40 to keep the water out, and keep rust from coming back. In your case, you might want to Clean all of that away with a shop towel, and clean very well with something fairly strong, as this stuff might be conductive (the transmission oil will actually be an insulator, i might soak transformers in it. So just worry about the water and WD-40 if you use it).
