Hey all, yesterday me and Firefox from 4hv met at my local super secret junkyard in hope to find some good stuff. Sitting there in the bottom of a big steel crate were 2 identical 14400v 1500va Potential Transformers made by Westinghouse. We both took one and we got them for a very good price. We were unsure if they worked or not bu we figured it was worth the chance. I just tested mine out this morning and it is in good working condition. Here are some pics..... Link2 Link2 Im waiting for Firefox to post some pics of his but they are identical.
Edit: here is a vid Link2

Heh, yep, I got one too. Just got home from Ohio, but I'll post some pictures when I get my hands on a working camera. All in all an awesome day, as I found a nice NST and some MOTs as well.

Haha mot's and NST's are nothing compared to PT's... Have you guys considered how much heavier these transformers are then normal 1500VA transformers? They probably have the core of a pig since they are literally the size as a 10kVA pig...

MOTs are designed to have the minimum iron and copper as they can get away with to reduce the costs. tongue I would expect transformers that are made to operate at 100% duty cycle to be a lot larger than MOTs that are made to operate at a much lower duty cycle.

On the contrary to popular belief, MOTs ARE made for continuous operation. They must be cooled with a fan, and will get VERY hot (100+ C), but they are made to withstand it, with a typical thermal rating of 200C. What sucks however is the efficiency.

That was a good find ! There is nothing like a good scrap yard. You never know what you will find and usually they charge you by the pound for whatever you get based on the price of the metal.
We have a scrap yard where I live but they process everything as soon as it comes in so it isn't very good for scavenging.

Nice PT you found smile

PT's are really nice high voltage sources. Nearly undestructable... i've also three PT's. One of them:

Pt1e

It's a 16kV unit. This biest weighs more than 50kg smile
