This may sound like a very amateur question.. but if you were to touch a flame such as that coming from a coil, wouldn't it burn you from the heat? Or does the skin effect from the high frequency play a factor.

Yes, it will definitely burn. A 300khz vttc does not have too thick flames, but my 8.2mhz vttc would burn anything. 300khz vttc had about 7 inch sparks, unrectified (tube conducts one way) with 2kv in and 811A, and the 8.2mhz vttc with 2kv in, fullwave rectified, and 833C had about 1 inch streamers. The arcs from the hf vttc would burn 12 gauge in a matter of seconds though.

I think a small SSTC could be realized with a bipolar transistor, they can switch really fast (but then there´s the problem where you get the current for the base)
