From this thread, I decided to start a new thread in the TC forum.
Ok, mag amps seem like a neat little piece of technology. I've read a few articles on them and now I'm wondering if one could be used in place of a spark gap on a tesla coil. There would have to be some dc control circuit of course and if the one I have couldn't handle the current I'd have to wind my own but, has anyone ever tried using one of these in a TC?

I think the peak currents available from these would be nowhere near the wanted currents for a TC... Remember that to support the full AC voltage, it would be as big as the transfmer powering it, just the resistance of the winding alone would limit the current greatly...

I know nothing about magnetic amplifiers, but if you want a solid state spark gap, the SISG is a very efficient alternative to spark gaps. Someone got 24 inch sparks with a small secondary, and only 117 watts in with 6 of these series SISGs.
They basically have a sidac that breaks down at the set voltage (judged by number of series sidacs and sidac voltage), which turns an igbt on, which conducts and act as a closed spark gap. then the anti-parallel diode will conduct in reverse to allow the oscillations to take place. The quenching is much better, and heat is reduced, which means much less energy wasted as heat.
