Amperex 5867 any good for VTTC (mu only 25)

I have a guy at work that keeps a brand new Amperex 5867 (or 5868, did not write it down...I will check next time I walk by his lab.) in his window as decoration. It has a mu of only 25 or so so it is not a good HF amplifier tube. It is a very good looking tube with a massive graphite anode.

Can it make a decent tesla coil? Most of the VTTC's I seen uses high gain tubes.

He promised that I could have it if I use it for a cool purpose.

Whichever of the two part numbers it is, both are specified as suitable for use as oscillators, which is what you are looking for! smile

If you are concerned about the amplification factor, then I should simply increase the amount of feedback, by, for example, adding some extra turns to your feedback winding, but I can't see this as being a problem.

This would make a very nice VTTC, i think. I would use a doubler for tubes with 3kv rating, but that is up to you, of course. It is doubtful that a 1kv increase in voltage would cause an arcover, but it will heat more. This however should not be too much of a problem, as when tuned correctly heating is minimized.

If it is not getting the needed feedback, mess with the grid leak resistor/capacitor and increase tickler coil turns (feedback). i would use the basic 833A/833C/811A vttc circuit, they are each pretty much the same and work well. I have even used that circuit with success with small TV sweep pentodes.

And a graphite anode would increase max dissipation, so you could run it harder without too much heating.
This must be one nice fellow to let this go for free!

I stopped by at the place and it is a 5868.

I have a 811A with socket and the anote cap (ceramic) that I was planning to build from but this is cooler smile

I wounder if someone would trade a pair of 2nF 40kV TDK caps for the complete 811A
