It is possible, but very inefficient and sparks will be limited.

I imagine it would be setup like a joule thief circuit.

Or possibly something similar to the 2N3055 flyback driver, I wonder.

Reaching once posted a schematic much like this, almost exactly the same.

I would still suggest something better though, if you want a good sstc try Steve Wards Mini Sstc.

About the simplest a good sstc can get. use the schematic on the bottom of the page.

One time, when I was going to build my first DRSSTC with IRG4PC50UD I found over the internet a DRSSTC that uses a halfbridge of IRG4PC50UD and two feedbacks connected direct to the IGBT Gate-Emitter. and on the power supply was a SCR and an other IRG4PC50UD. The SCR was to make a the BPS and the IRG4PC50UD was for shutdown for the overcurrent.

I can find the schematic right now, but there arent many coils with irg4pc50ud, you can search over the internet and see if you find, you can also use the schematic as a normal sstc.

In fact, there was an old dumb concept - just rig the primary through a PNP or NPN and use the base terminal as the secondary ground. Sparks will be short of course, also the heating level is very high - but lol, it's a real single-part SSTC :) (never tried myself however, but I guess it should work, at least some have tried it out with positive results).

(offtopic @Arc - hehe, seen your sig in original, way less happy, interpretation :D)
