Any HV gear has the potential to cause damage even to apparently robust electrical stuff - the HV, even at low currents, can cause insulation damage, and can initiate an arc, which is then powered by the low voltage but higher powered supply to cause more serious mayhem. Not grounding a motor case would be a pretty good way to do this - once grounded however it would be pretty hard for the HV to get anywhere bad. Motors with electronic controls would be somewhat nore vulnerable.
