It is interesting, but I think "Tesla coil" is just fine. It is a common convention to not just show possessiveness, but actually name a device after its inventor. Other examples like Faraday cage, Marx generator, Minkowski spacetime, or the Rogowski coil come to mind.

I think the 's shows ownership. My opinion is that it depends on its popularity. When only one person does it. its 's. When its popular, its named after the person, so no 's. ts like stars.

'Tesla's coil', from what I've read, s simply the air-core transformer, whereas the Tesla coil includes the resonance in the transformer and primary circuit and the capacitors and the step-up transformer. I may be wrong, but this is just what I've read.

I would guess that in Victorian useage it was often referred to as Mr Tesla's Coil - and the name we have now is a modern contraction and de-personalization of this.
The 'apostophe s' is itself a contraction of 'his' - connoting ownership - as we see on 17th century maps, for example - where the words of ownership are still written out in full, e.g. Prince Edward's Island is written out in full as Prince Edward His Island.
Thus, in a sense, the change from Tesla's Coil to Tesla Coil reflects a change from personal to collective ownership of the invention.
